Story: Given the infamy of both Happy Madison & Adam Sandler's films, it's no surprise that this movie has a...crass tone to it. Actually, screw that because this movie is somehow the most mean spirited thing I've ever had to sit through. It does nothing to make it likeable because Davey throughout most of the movie is nothing but a colossal douchebag & the hypocrisy of the characters & writers. And the plot itself is so so cliched with a 'buddy comedy' plot involving Davey being forced to do community service with senile Whitey, the two not getting along, they start getting along & then a conflict ensues which leads to a sad third act until one apologises & everyone is happy! Yeah, it's that kind of movie! The humour just appeals to the lowest common denominator with deer eating shit (which becomes a running gag which REALLY outstays its welcome), bodily function humor, racial stereotypes (including the obligatory Rob Schneider appearance) & a orgy of product placements all of which just left me disgusted throughout. I don't understand how Adam Sandler thought all of it should have out on the screen for the world to see & qualify it as 'comedy'! But the worst part of it all is that the movie tries to add in emotion & drama through Davey's backstory trying to manipulate the audience into having that 'feel-good' holiday mood when it doesn't work in the slightest when everything else that happens is so despicably awful! In fact, I don't even get why it's set during Hanukkah because you could easily rewrite it so that it could not be set during the holidays & it would still be the same because they never really dive into Hanukkah itself other than being the time when Davey's parents died. So, yeah, the writing's awful. I don't think I need to explain anymore with why this isn't worth caring about!
Animation: Despite all of the atrocities that come with the story, the saddest part about this is that the animation is actually really really good! In fact, the overall look and especially the character designs heavily reminded me of the look of The Iron Giant, which makes sense since some animators on that movie worked on this one! Speaking of the designs, I get that Davey is supposed to look like Adam Sandler & most are supposed to look more realistic, but others like Whitey & his sister fall more into the cartoony territory, so it does feel a tad inconsistent. The character animation is also well done with the characters moving realistically & even on the animals, it is pretty accurate with how they move. Even the backgrounds of Dukesberry look nice with the accurate depiction of a small New England town with all the snow, architecture & simplicity of it all, and even the addition of the Christmas/Hanukkah decorations do create that winter feeling (if it weren't for the fact what's right in front of us is the stupidest pile of deer crap I've had to witness). However, there is one massive problem with all of this: it doesn't fit the tone of the movie at all! While it's story & characters are going for a more over the top & 'comedic' manner, the animation makes it look more realistic & therefore, scenes aren't quite as well executed as they should be. It just doesn't feel right, if you get what I mean. So despite the really really good things about the animation technically, that doesn't mean that it's right for the look and tone of the movie.
Yep, this movie has a 3 breasted woman which apparently makes it funny! |
Characters: ...Where do I begin with the characters in this movie? Davey (voiced by Adam Sandler), despite having a very tragic backstory with his parents dying in a car accident when he was 12, still manages to be the most despicable, intolerable, hateable prick I have ever had the displeasure of watching! Nothing about him makes him redeemable despite the movie trying so hard to because he never actually realizes the consequences of his selfish actions & crimes. Whitey (again voiced by Adam Sandler) is one of the most irritating side characters I've ever had to tolerate. With such an immature voice which sounds like nails on a chalkboard to match his immature personality, he's equally as unlikeable as Davey because literally all he cares about is winning the Patch Award despite not doing anything to deserve it & being a butt monkey to everyone's spiteful jokes. Then again, part of me does feel sorry for him given all the abuse he has to endure throughout which apparently qualifies as 'comedy'. And ironically, Sandler also voiced his twin sister who while still being annoying, actually sounds like a different person compared to Sandler. Other side characters like Mr Chang (the obligatory racist Rob Schneider appearance), the three-breasted woman, the Judge are just there for a one-off joke which isn't actually funny or to spout of useless exposition. And as for the product placements...yeah, they have creepy personalities, are entirely pointless and unbelievably crass from concept! In fact, the only character worth caring about in this is Jennifer (voiced by Adam Sandler's wife Jackie Sandler) as she's just been through a turbulent divorce, moved back to Dukesberry & has to raise her son Benjamin as a single mother. But even with that, she can only qualify as the love interest except Davey doesn't deserve her at all & she's so so bland cos she's pushed to the sidelines in favour of shitting deer! Not a single character in this is worth liking because they're so mean spirited, abysmally acted, annoying & useless! Seriously, why must Happy Madison carry on giving the most annoying and irritating characters the spotlight?!
Songs: Yes, there are songs in this & to be honest, this movie didn't need to have them besides Adam Sandler wanting to show off his musical chops. Davey's Song does nothing to explain why he acts like such an asshole and is just there to crowbar his personality in an obnoxious manner. The Patch Song is as if not more obnoxious thanks to Whitey's irritating voice screeching in my ears for about a minute and a half about that stupid Patch Award. Long Ago is admittedly pretty decent as Jennifer and Davey sing about their youth and back when he was a nice guy...until Whitey butts in with his non-existent sex life! Technical Foul is infuriatingly annoying as it's all about Whitey & Elinor's telling Davey their house rules in a really obnoxious manner. The Intervention Song just has all of the product placement logos singing in a hallucination that Davey's having to convince him to let out his pain of losing his parents. It's just so obnoxiously crass how this is shoehorned in compared to the rest of the movie & therefore completely loses all of the 'emotion' or 'development'. Bum Biddy is just used to get Davey to convince everyone that Whitey deserves the Patch Award & to redeem herself, yet feels artificial because he never faces the consequences of his actions! So...yeah. These songs really are the cherry on the top for how obnoxious and annoying this movie is and are only there to accentuate Adam Sandler's ego!
