This would be the first proper Christmas special for the American/Canadian cartoon series, Ed, Edd n Eddy! I know this sounds pretty bizarre, but I loved watching this show as a kid despite the gross-out humour mostly because of the memorably weird characters with distinct designs & personalities. Anyway, this would be the only 30 minute Christmas special for the series although they did another Christmas episode Fa-La-La-La-Ed(which I'll review next year). So can this special bring back the memories of the show for me, or is it too disgusting for my tastes nowadays? Let's find out!
Story: In this special, after Eddy discovers his parents have given him clothes for Christmas which he hates, he decides to find a way to get everyone else's in the neighbourhood by getting them to adopt him (yeah, it comes from Edd using the word 'adopt' in a sentence in a very different context), which of course fails miserably as Ed & Edd try to find a way to stop him from being selfish & find Christmas spirit. And once you expect him to change his ways, he regresses as he steals everyone else's Christmas presents from Santa, which Ed is furious about & they end up in a weird version of the Nativity with the Kanker sisters As you can tell, this is one of them generic Scrooge-ish type plots except that Eddy doesn't change at all. although it's safe to say he gets his just desserts by the end of the special. However, I will say what saves this special is the trademark humour you'd only know from the show along with the characters. It had me laughing throughout despite the weak story with the oddly funny yet jerkass twist by the end & the execution is also pretty good along with the pacing. Sure, the story isn't the best on the writing side, but the execution & humour is what saves it from being bad!
Animation: Yeah, the animation isn't really all that great despite it being a special! The character designs are pretty basic as they correlate with each character's personality depending on the eccentricity with how cartoony they look. The character animation is pretty good though as they go over the top & it definitely works for something like this. Although the quality is on par with a Saturday morning cartoon, the backgrounds do look good around the cul de sac during Christmas thanks to the snow, Christmas lights & the imagery like the Christmas tree, even if the lighting can be a bit inconsistent at times. Sure, the animation looks pretty cheap & limited overall, you could argue that it's intentional for something like this. By the way, my rating will be depending on qualities on cartoons since I definitely don't think it's fair to compare it to a theatrical animated film cos for a cartoon it looks pretty good despite looking cheap for the most part!
Characters: Considering it had been years since I saw the show, the first thing I remembered was the characters! Of course Ed, Edd and Eddy are the most memorable being the Three Stooges-like characters doing slapstick thanks to their contrasting personalities, but Eddy is the main character who's pretty much a selfish idiot throughout, even if he gets his just desserts by the end while Ed and Edd try to put Christmas spirit in him & realize what's more important. As for the rest of the characters, they're their same selves with Nazz being the girl that's nice to everyone, Johnny being the same bizarre kid with his best friend Plank at his side, Rolfe being the same whacko with for animals, Jimmy being the same whiny yet innoncent wimp, Sarah being the same bitchy little sister to Ed, Kevin being the 'streetwise' kid that bullies Ed, Edd and Eddy & the Kanker sisters are the same weird girls that have crushes on the main 3 characters! None of them really develop in the special, but the same eccentric personalities easily make them memorable!
Overall, I surprisingly enjoyed this special despite the issues with the story & limited animation mostly thanks to the humour & the funny memorable characters make up for them & brought back the nostalgia of the show for me! I would recommend this to fans of the show that would enjoy this, but as for others, it is admittedly of an acquired taste depending on your sense of humour.
