Barbie in The Pink Shoes

This one is pretty different compared to the other Barbie films and happens to be the first Barbie film related to ballet since Barbie in Swan Lake. There really isn't much to say on the behind the scenes info of this movie other than it was never announced or known about until the first trailer was released & that it features ballets like Swan Lake, Giselle, The Snow Queen & even has continuity nods to The Nutcracker as it was the very first CGI Barbie movie. Anyway, can Barbie's pink shoes be able to pirouette this movie up to the top, or is it as tragic as the previous ballets mentioned? Let's find out!

Story The story involves a 17 year old dancer Kristyn, whose given a pair of shows that transports her to a world of ballet where everything ends up crossing over while she has to find a way to get back in time for a ballet recital. And...here's the biggest problem with the movie: the main plot. It's just Kristyn going through different ballets as different characters all of which does nothing to progress her character development or resolve anything. In fact, it took me until the very end as to what the plot reminded me of: The Wizard of Oz, right down to parallelling different characters in both universes. At the very least it teaches kids about popular ballets using the same music & the plots without sanitizing them by mentioning the deaths and dark themes that occur. subtly. But the main problem I have is the message! Sure, it may encourage confidence & being yourself, but all I got was 'deviate & break the rules & you'll be rewarded' as Kristyn deviates the choreography she's given for an obligatory magical dress change & is rewarded with a scholarship! Seriously, in real life, you could get kicked out for deviating! OK, I will admit some of the inside jokes made me laugh with the ballets & the pointless love triangle with Hilarion, Albrecht & Kristyn can be funny, but other than that, there's not a whole lot of substance when it comes to the main plot!

Animation: Yeah, since this is made by a different animation studio, the animation itself is considerably different than before. The character designs look more creepy & plastic-y this time round, as well as the texturing on the skin, even if the hair looks & moves a bit more realistic this thime round. The ballet itself is very well choreographed, but the very realistic motion capture compared to the stiff character animation used without the ballet is pretty jarring. I will say that the backgrounds are very beautiful in the world Kristyn & Hailey go to like in Giselle & Swan Lake & are possibly the best thing about the animation next to the costume designs. Pretty clear the animators did their research with the ballets & it does pay off. Honestly, there's not much else to say other than at least they tried with the ballet side, it's just the rest like the people they need to improve on.

Characters: First, there's Kristyn Farraday, a 17 year old dancer that wants to do what she wants with the choreography & has to save the ballet world she goes into while hijinks ensue. As you can tell I didn't like her all that much. Tara is the generic obnoxious girl who gets all the solos & is completely forgotten about besides her Odile parallel & suddenly being nice by the end! The Snow Queen, the main villain & her personality paralleling Kristyn's teacher Madame Natasha with direction, is pretty cliched & no, not influenced by Elsa from Frozen since this was released before Frozen & her design is like the book & is actually evil! Albrecht and Hilarion are rather funny to watch during their quest to find Kristyn-as-Giselle, Hailey is her best friend that designs costumes & convinces her to stop being in the ballet world they go to and Dillon/Prince Siegfried is just the love interest. Honestly, they're not really the best characters I've seen in a Barbie movie.

Overall, Barbie and the Pink Shoes feels like the most unecessary one I've seen with a morally confusing story with pretentious parallels, some nicely choreographed motion capture ballet sequences & background animation & boring/cliched characters. I can only really recommend this to ballet lovers who know the ballets the movie mentions or girls who aspire to be ballerinas.
Story: 3/10
Animation: 5/10
Characters: 4/10
Overall: 4/10
